If you want to invest in renewables, the climate is right in Schleswig-Holstein. That’s not just because the characteristically stiff breezes drive some 2,600 wind turbines with a total output of almost MW 2,500 – enough to meet around 40% of the state’s power needs. Wind turbine manufacturers also enjoy an excellent production climate. On the one hand, Schleswig-Holstein offers a variety of test sites for onshore and offshore operations; on the other hand, a site near to one of the many ports and harbours ensures easy transportation to customers around the world.

The world’s largest trade fair for wind energy, HUSUMwind, is also staged in Schleswig-Holstein – in Husum on the windy west coast of the “state between the seas”. 700 exhibitors from 35 countries and 20,000 visitors from 40 countries turn the town into the hub of the world’s wind energy industry every two years.

Besides supporting wind power, Schleswig-Holstein also promotes other forms of renewable energy – with a particular focus on encouraging biomass plants in rural areas.

With centres of excellence for wind energy (Flensburg), biomass (Kiel) and hydrogen and fuel cell technology (Lübeck), Schleswig-Holstein’s universities serve as hubs of a tight-meshed network in innovative, sustainable power generation where practically minded top scientists work closely with industry experts.
